Where to stay in Garachico, Tenerife: 5 hotels with real charm

Where to stay in Garachico, Tenerife: San Roque, La Quinta Roja, Isla Baja Suites, El Patio and Gara. Which to pick as a couple, with kids or on a budget.

Hotel San Roque in Garachico: the red mansion with its tiled roofs and palm-lined pool, the sea to one side and the mountain behind the town.

Garachico is one of those towns in Tenerife you like the moment you arrive. The cobbled streets, the old houses, El Caletón and that calm the north of the island has make it one of my favourite places in Tenerife. And if you are going to visit Garachico, I would try to stay at least one night. During the day plenty of visitors arrive, but as they start to leave the town changes completely. You can wander with no rush, sit down for a drink and enjoy the real Garachico.

Also, there are not many hotels in Garachico. Most are small places with real character, many of them in old buildings that have kept a very traditional feel.

If you are looking for where to stay in Garachico, I have picked five hotels I find particularly lovely and that are worth considering for a break in northern Tenerife.

If you book through our links it costs you exactly the same, and it helps us keep the blog going. Thank you.

Why stay in Garachico?

Before I show you the hotels, let me tell you why I think it is worth staying in Garachico rather than just passing through.

Garachico is one of the Prettiest Villages in Spain, and you only need a walk through its old town to see why. It was one of the most important ports in Tenerife until the volcanic eruption of 1706 changed the town's fate completely.

Today you can wander among its old houses, churches and convents and, a few steps away, swim in El Caletón, the natural pools formed by the lava from that eruption. We cover all of that properly in our separate Garachico guide.

It is also a good base if you want to see other parts of northern Tenerife.

But honestly, what I like most about sleeping in Garachico is being able to see it once the day trippers have gone. Early in the morning, or in the evening when the streets start to empty, is when you begin to enjoy the real Garachico.

And now, on to the hotels in Garachico:

1. Boutique Hotel San Roque

If there is one hotel in Garachico that deserves to be known beyond the island, it is this one. The Boutique Hotel San Roque occupies an 18th-century house in the heart of the old town, a few steps from El Caletón and the main square. The architecture alone makes it worth it: high ceilings, natural light coming in through the inner courtyards, that proportion of old rooms nobody builds any more.

But what makes the San Roque unique is the mix of historic Canarian architecture and contemporary art. The gallerist José Luis Adelantado brought the two eras together, and the result is a space where Bauhaus furniture sits against centuries-old stone walls, with artwork in every corner. It is not a museum, it is a hotel you live in.

It has 20 rooms, and no two are the same. From the standard doubles to duplexes with their own sitting room, taking in the junior suites and the Suite La Torre, which has panoramic views over the town and the coast that stop you in your tracks. All of them have a whirlpool bath and a smart TV. The hotel is adults only, which guarantees a calm you will struggle to find elsewhere.

The Anturium restaurant, beside the heated pool, serves Canarian and Mediterranean cooking made with local produce. The buffet breakfast includes island options. In the evenings they put on a small free social event, which is a nice way to meet other guests.

What I like most: the Suite La Torre and the central courtyard, which has a sculpture called La Centinela that gives the space a real presence.

Ideal for: couples after a break with plenty of character, anyone who loves art and architecture, or anybody who wants to stay in the most distinctive hotel in Garachico.

2. La Quinta Roja

La Quinta Roja has something very few hotels in Spain can claim: it was the residence of the Marqués de la Quinta Roja and dates from the 17th century: the Marqués had it built in 1689. The building was carefully restored and opened as a hotel in 2001, keeping the original wooden ceilings and the inner courtyard with its marble fountains, pure classic Canarian architecture.

The location could not be better, because it is right on Garachico's main square, facing the old Convento de San Francisco, with the town literally at its feet and the natural pools of El Caletón 50 metres away. Imagine getting up and going down for a dip before breakfast.

It has 19 rooms over two floors, with wooden ceilings, satellite TV, private bathroom with shower and a hairdryer. The common areas are the highlight: a quiet garden, a roof terrace looking over the town, a cosy library, a sitting room and a bar. The buffet breakfast is very well rated.

And one detail I find lovely: they have free bicycles for guests, perfect for going out to explore Garachico and the area without taking the car.

3. Isla Baja Suites

Isla Baja Suites is the smallest and most intimate on this list. It has just six suites, in a landmark 18th-century house restored in 2009 with real respect for the original architecture. Tea-pine ceilings, Canarian-style décor, generous spaces and that feeling of being in a private house with all the services of a hotel.

The location is one of the best in Garachico: right in the centre, 150 metres from the Castillo de San Miguel. Some suites have direct views over the Atlantic and the old port. El Caletón is only a few steps away. And by the way, sunrise from the sea-view rooms is spectacular.

The suites are roomy, with a sitting area, sofa bed, flat-screen TV, a kitchenette with a fridge and a full bathroom. Most look outside and several have a balcony. A continental breakfast is served in the restaurant every morning.

4. Hotel Rural El Patio

El Patio is different from everything else on this list. It is not in the centre of town but on a banana plantation, surrounded by 60 hectares of banana trees with the Atlantic behind. If what you want is to switch off, this is your place.

The estate's history goes back to the mid-16th century, when a chapel was planned and the first vines were planted. Today it keeps that historic-hacienda spirit, with a central courtyard presided over by Phoenix canariensis palms and a dragon tree that shades the benches where you will want to sit and read all afternoon.

The rooms are rustic in style and on the ground floor, with free wifi, a private bathroom and some with their own terrace. The heated pool is open all year, with salt water and sun loungers around it. There is also a tennis court, paths through the estate for a walk among the banana trees at dusk, a solarium area and a sauna.

Breakfast includes fresh fruit from the estate and local produce. There is free parking. The hotel is five minutes by car from the town, and that small distance is exactly what gives it its character.

5. Gara Hotel

The Gara Hotel Garachico is one of the most affordable options for staying in Garachico without giving up a good location or comfort. It sits in an old house facing the sea, right in the centre of town, and has a roof terrace looking over the ocean and the old town. It is also very close to El Caletón, Garachico's famous natural pools.

It is a good choice if you are visiting Garachico as part of a route around northern Tenerife and want a base to move from, rather than a destination hotel in itself. The rooms are functional and clean, the welcome is warm, and it is close to El Caletón, the restaurants and the shops.

Which one should you choose? It depends what you are after

  • A special break as a couple, with art, quiet and a pool: Hotel San Roque. It is the most exclusive of the five and adults only, so it is not the one if you are travelling with children.
  • It is your first time in Garachico and you want to be right in the centre, close to El Caletón and able to walk out to dinner: La Quinta Roja.
  • Somewhere small and intimate, with a kitchen so you can put something together if you do not fancy going out, and lovely sea views: Isla Baja Suites.
  • You are travelling as a family and want to switch off: Hotel Rural El Patio. It has a pool, a tennis court, paths through the banana plantation and free parking, and it is about five minutes by car from Garachico.
  • You want to spend less without giving up a seafront location: Gara Hotel, a simple, well-placed option for enjoying Garachico.

What to do in Garachico and around

If you stay here, the hotel itself is already part of the plan. But if you want to make the most of your stay, these are some of the things you can do in Garachico and the surrounding area:

The church of Santa Ana from the cobbled street.

Garachico free walking tour: a good way to learn the town's history. Booking is free, you pay what you think it was worth at the end, it lasts about two hours and it starts on the square.

El Caletón: the famous natural pools formed by the lava are a must. If you want them calmer, try going in the morning, before the coach trips arrive.

The old town: it is worth getting lost slowly among the Convento de San Francisco, the church of Santa Ana, the Castillo de San Miguel and the Plaza de la Libertad. With the free tour you also get the story behind each of them.

Another swim, more local: ten minutes away, in Los Silos, is the Charco de los Chochos, a small natural pool we swim in every time we pass.

The Teno Rural Park: a few kilometres away, with hiking routes through volcanic landscapes and spectacular sea views.

The food: the guachinches of the north are the best way to eat well and cheaply, and Icod de los Vinos is fifteen minutes away.

Our verdict: stay the night, even if it is only one

Garachico is lovely during the day, but once the day trippers leave and the town gets its calm back, it has a completely different charm. So if you can, stay at least one night.

Any of these five is a good choice; which one depends on what you are after: art, location, sea views, quiet on a country estate, or simply a good price. Rather than going by the scores, think about the kind of stay you want.

And one last tip: book ahead, especially in high season or over a weekend, because these are all small places.
